Amelia Jane Parson

Amelia didn't feel like going into the air conditioned library that particular afternoon. The sun was high in the sky, and she was going to go out, into the camp, where heaven forbid, people might be. She wasn't going to go canoeing though, she wasn't athletic and the water scared her, but she did bring her newest read, Looking for Alaska. The teenager found the book highly impossible in her lifetime, but still interesting. Flicking her fingers against the end of her bookmark, Amelia came to the shore of the crystalline lake.

Her blue grey eyes caught the silhouette of two campers paddling out on a canoe. She could hear them laughing from the shoreline.  Amelia scanned the sands for shade, and soon was sitting, cross-legged under a large oak tree. Her fingers traced along the texture of the pages, not paying attention to the buzzing world around her.

Quentin had gotten up early that day, jumping out of bed the moment his eyes opened. He noticed that most of his siblings were still asleep and shook his head, a look of disapproval on his face. He decided, however, to let them sleep in a bit. Their loss, he supposed. He got dressed, putting on jeans, his orange Camp Half-Blood shirt and slid his boots on, lacing them up. He walked out the door and smiled, looking at the sky before saying, "My god, it's sunny outside!" He then sighed happily and strolled towards the dining pavilion, ready to start the day.

Over the course of the morning before lunch, he had done some sword fighting lessons with some of the younger campers, helping out with instructing. Once that was done, he went canoeing with a few of his siblings, racing them from point to point. Of course, he always lost but he would make sure to beat them in something else later. Once they were done with that, they all got lunched and shared a nice time. Now stuffed with delicious food, he decided to take a walk with a demigod from the Demeter cabin who was about a year younger than him. They talked for a bit and Quentin was about to tell his friend a joke when he looked over at one of his siblings sitting alone under an oak tree near the Canoe Lake. He looked back to his companion and said, "I'll catch up with you later, alright?" The other half-blood nodded, smiling, and walked off towards a different location. Probably the Demeter cabin. Quentin looked back towards the girl sitting by the tree, not entirely sure who it was. He walked towards her, figuring out who it was when he got a bit closer and smiled. He plopped down on the ground next to her and looked over. "Hey sis. What's goin' on?" The boy asked, putting his hands behind him so that he could support himself as he leaned back.

Amelia smiled down at her book as she continued reading. Her mind was focused solely on creating a vivid picture of the scene. She could see the night sky, smell second hand smoke, and hear the voices she imagined for the characters. A new voice startled her out of the book, as her bright eyes snapped over to see her half brother, Quentin. "Hi," the demigod said softly, averting her gaze to her feet. Sometimes she questioned why she lost the 'energetic' gene that a few of her siblings had, but then she remembered her past life. Maybe it was better to be quiet. "I'm just reading," Amelia responded, motioning to the book she had in her hands. Sliding her bookmark into her copy, the demigod set it aside. "Uh - what about you?" she asked, hesitantly looking over at Quentin.

He nodded his head when she said she was reading and replied, "Cool, cool..." Quentin glanced at the cover, and scanned the title, struggling a bit to figure it out but once he did he nodded, about to comment on it when she asked him a question. He looked back over to her and smiled, massaging his neck a bit. "Well...was just taking a walk with friend. Earlier I was helping with sword lessons. Then I was out there, in a canoe, racing some of our other siblings. Can't remember who though..." He thought for a moment, but then waved it off. "Anyway, you been here all day? Or did you just recently come out here?"

Amelia studied her half brother for a moment, wondering how he, unlike her, could be so social and well liked. She had tried that years ago and failed miserably. She didn't have enough want to try again. After a moment she returned his smile, brushing a strand of her blonde curls from her eyes. "That's nice of you, to help," the demigod said softly, looking again at her shoes. "I've always been dreadful at sword fighting," Amelia admitted, laughing as she readjusted the bows on her ballet flats. It probably didn't help that she was nearly terrified of messing up in front of so many people. The demigod figured if she was in a tough spot, her crossbow would help her better than any sword. "I just got out here," she answered, nodding slowly.

Quentin noticed her studying him out of the corner of his eye as he had been talking, but he didn't mention it. After he was done speaking, he saw her return his smile which made his grow a bit. He listened as she said it was nice of him to help and that she was bad at sword fighting. He laughed along with her and shrugged before replying, "Well, I could always help out if you'd want. Haven't really had much planned lately."

Amelia noted how his smile grew as she did. She liked observing people, it was far more interesting than speaking. That way she could note how her half brother's skin crinkled around his eyes when he smiled big, and how he always spoke kindly to her. She didn't mind being spoken to softly, it made her feel better than the yells she would receive with the Parson's. "You'd do that?" the teenager asked, puzzled as she turned to look at Quentin. "That's so nice of you - but I don't know... I'm not very strong," she admitted with a defeated sigh.

He patiently waited until Amelia responded to his proposal. She asked if he would do that and he simply nodded, listening to how she said that was nice of him but that she wasn't that strong. This brought out a light chuckle from Quentin and he replied, "You don't need to be strong to be a good swordsman. Or woman for that matter. You see, swordplay doesn't just rely on brute force. Sometimes it's effective if you're going against an average fighter, but a good fighter can easily predict such rash movements. Swordplay is all about finding holes in your opponents style, trying to exploit them. Even going against a heavily armored opponent, a good swordsman that has leather on could take him down. Being quick and precise can be just as effective as being slow and brutal." He sat up a bit more, bringing his knees up to wrap his arms around them. "Don't worry about being too weak to fight with a sword. Because there's no such thing." He had a bit of a serious smile on as he turned to look back at his half-sister.

Amelia's smile diminished slightly as he laughed. It could've been a lighthearted laugh, but it was still a laugh and she hadn't caught what it was directed at. She hoped it wasn't her. Listening to her brother, she ran her fingers over the cover of her book, the letters sticking up farther than the rest of the material. Quentin knew a lot about swordplay, as she began to noticed. Words like brutal and rash stood out to her, as they were average thoughts she associated with swords. Most warriors fought with swords, but they always seemed larger and strong than she. Maybe a crossbow was a coward's weapon, but she was comfortable with it. Glancing her grey eyes over at him, she gave him a brief smile. "I dunno, my crossbow begs to differ," she said with a smile. "But, I guess if you'd help...?" Amelia turned to look at him more squarely. "I could give it a try."

Quentin had been focused on his mini speech, so he didn't notice Amelia's smile diminish a bit. However, what he did see was her giving him another smile as she made a slight joke and his smile grew once more. She then went on to say she'd give it a try and his smile grew so large it looked as though his face might split in half. "Alright! When do you wanna start? We could practice now. Or we could wait until tomorrow. Don't really have anything else planned for tonight or the morning. So, your call."

Amelia's grin got wider as his did, nearly laughing at how large both of their childish smiles were. His excitement was contagious, and soon she too was giddy for the chance to learn how to properly sword fight. "We could uh - " She cast a glance down at her book, wondering if the characters could wait af few more hours. "We can go now, I just need to change and put my book away," the demigod decided with a laugh. She stood up, wiping a bit of grass off her skirt. "I could meet you to train in fifteen minutes?" Amelia asked, the smile never leaving her face

Quentin clapped his hands together and stood up, rubbing some of the grass off of his jeans. "Sounds good. I'll go and check the armory for a weapon and some armor you can use." With that, he turned and jogged off, calling back "Try not to keep me waiting too long!" He laughed after he said it and then continued on his way,  barely able to contain his excitement.
